The European tour wanted it. And, after some reflection, Luke Donald wanted it, too. Emboldened by seemingly unanimous backing, Donald accepted an offer to stay on as Europe's Ryder Cup captain for its defense of the 17-inch golden trophy in 2025 at Bethpage Black in New York. That's the last time an away team has won the Ryder Cup. You would think he was going to be a Ryder Cup captain at some point and if it’s this time, great.

But I am so proud of my 12 guys," said Europe skipper Luke Donald, whose team seized control of the 44th Ryder Cup on Friday with a 4-0 sweep of the morning foursomes. The 32-year-old Fleetwood, who picked up three points from his four matches, had not expected to be centre of attention. Northern Ireland's McIlroy, playing his seventh Ryder Cup, beat dogged rookie Sam Burns 3&1. McIlroy, Europe's talisman, ended up with four points to take his career Ryder Cup tally to 18, and said it made up for the pain of Whistling Straits. But Fowler drove his tee shot into water at the par-four 16th and when Fleetwood found the green, Europe could breathe easy.

ROME, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Europe picked up just where they left off by storming into an early lead in the Ryder Cup foursomes on Saturday, with crowd favourites Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy - dubbed Fleetwood Mac - winning the first three holes of the first match. He did shuffle the order slightly, sending McIlroy, who won both his Friday matches, and Fleetwood out first, perhaps as part of a strategy to get the crowd firing early on, and how it paid off. However, they were horribly off-beam early on as Fleetwood’s 35ft (11 m) putt on the second ignited the crowd. "He was the ultimate European Ryder Cup player who made everyone else play better. We always respect Seve and he is a big part of the Ryder Cup for all of us.

LIV absentees will miss us this week, says McIlroy

ROME, Sept 27 (Reuters) - After months of debating the absence of European Ryder Cup stalwarts Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy said that this was the week when the LIV absentees would "miss this more than we are going to miss them". "I think this week is a realisation that the decision that they made has led to not being a part of this week, and that's tough. McIlroy stood firm against LIV from the start and now finds himself as the Europe's "Grandfather of the House" as he prepares for his seventh Ryder Cup. "I just didn't put any emphasis on making a Ryder Cup team until you make one, and then you never want to be off one again. The most enjoyable moments in my career have been being a part of European Ryder Cup teams.

Sept 1 (Reuters) - Matt Fitzpatrick celebrated his 29th birthday by storming into the lead following the European Masters second round at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland on Friday, boosting his chances of claiming a place in the European Ryder Cup team. The Englishman, who had five of his birdies on the back nine, must finish at least tied seventh with one other golfer to qualify for a Ryder Cup spot via the world points list. A couple of pins that didn't feel like they suited me," said Fitzpatrick, who won the European Masters in 2017 and 2018. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, who went into the European Masters in the final spot on the European points list, dodged the cut by a shot, but Victor Perez and Rasmus Hojgaard both failed to make it through to the weekend. Rory McIlroy and John Rahm have secured their spots on Team Europe via the European points list with Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton assured places via the world points list.

The 27-year-old, a native of Hoylake, came through qualifying to earn a place in the 156-man field. Rory McIlroy stands a better chance of claiming the top prize, the in-form world number two warming up for the tournament by winning the Scottish Open on Sunday. A fifth major victory is long overdue for the Northern Irishman, who won the British Open in 2014 when it was also held at Royal Liverpool. American world number one Scottie Scheffler is among the early starters and will tee off at 9:47 a.m, a few minutes before defending champion Cameron Smith. The R&A, which organises the British Open, welcomed the partnership agreement and hoped for "an end to the disruption in the men's professional game".

HOYLAKE, England, July 18 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy will start his British Open bid playing alongside European Ryder Cup team mates Jon Rahm and Justin Rose in the first two rounds at Hoylake. Rahm, the world number three, is aiming to become the first Spaniard to lift the Claret Jug since Seve Ballesteros in 1988. Australian Cameron Smith begins his title defence at 0958 in the company of U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and Olympic gold medallist Xander Schauffele. American world number one Scottie Scheffler is also among the early starters in a group with England's Tommy Fleetwood and Australian Adam Scott. Royal Liverpool member Matthew Jordan, who came through qualifying to earn a place in the 156-man field, will hit the opening tee shot of the 151st British Open at 0635.

But while they could one day find themselves members of the PGA Tour again, those who joined LIV Golf may get a frosty welcome from those competing on the U.S.-based circuit. The people that left the PGA Tour irreparably harmed this Tour, started litigation against it," world number three McIlroy said on Wednesday. Another unknown is how the golf calendar will look under the framework of the merger or whether the LIV Golf League team-based competition will even exist after its 2023 season. Typically, a resigned player who wants to rejoin the DP World Tour for the 2023 season would have had to give their notification by May 1 of this year. DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley said subsequent requests would require proof of an exceptional circumstance to be allowed, something he said would "be difficult and highly unlikely that that would happen."

Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY SportsJan 31 (Reuters) - U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick has agreed to participate in the tech-focused golf league that is being launched next year by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's TMRW Sports in conjunction with the PGA Tour, the company said on Tuesday. The league, whose launch was announced last August, is being billed as a first-of-its-kind experience for golf as each two-hour event will be held on a data-rich, virtual course complete with a tech-infused, short-game complex. Organizers promise a high-energy, greenside fan experience for the short-form version of golf in a coliseum environment with every shot to be shown live on primetime television. Fitzpatrick previously won the 2013 U.S.
